California Governor, US Senator. At the age of twelve he ran away from home and went to sea as a cabin boy. After several years being on ships at sea, he engaged in banking, milling, mining, farming, ranching, whaling, and operating steamships on the coasts of Western America. He was a member of the California State Senate (1869-76) and he was elected the 14th Governor of California, in 1879, serving until 1883. In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Leland Stanford and was reelected four times, serving until 1915. He was the third-longest serving US Senator in California State history. Not a candidate for reelection due to ill health, he returned to California and lived in retirement until his death at age 83.
