Civil War Union Army Officer. He served in the Civil War as a Captain in the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Said to have worn out 5 horses enroute to Gettysburg. He stood 6 feet 10-1/2 inches tall and weighing in at 300 pounds in a day when Lincoln at 6'4" was considered a giant. Four brothers served with him, one dying at Chancellorsville.
