He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Sgt Rayner was killed when he was struck by an improvised explosive device while leading his men on patrol in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province.
Aged 34, he was born in Andover and considered Bradford, West Yorkskire his hometown. In 1994 he joined the 1st Battalion, The King's Own Royal Border Regiment, the same battalion in which his father served for most of his army carrer. Sgt Rayner previously deployed as a Warrior armoured vehicle driver twice to Bosnia as well as Macedonia. He served as a Regimental Instructor Gunnery, Driving and Maintenance Instructor, and Fleet Manager before moving to the the 1st Battalion, The King's Regiment for his first tour of duty in Iraq. He deployed again to Iraq with the newly formed 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment. In 2009 he served his first tour in Afghanistan as part of the Theatre Reserve Battalion and was posted at the heavily-attacked Patrol Base Shammel Storrei. He received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on his return. In 2010 he deployed again to Afghanistan and was lauded as one of the best Javelin Commanders in the army. Known as "Skippy", he had a forthright manner and was full of energy, someone who enjoyed life to the full. He was a keen mountain biker, skiier and avid supporter of Bradford City FC. His personal motto was "Our greatest glory consists not in never failing but in rising every time we fall."
Sgt Rayner leaves behind his wife Wendy, son Derek, parents Peter and Bernadette, siblings, other relatives and many friends. His wife called him a "fantastic loving husband and father, son, son-in-law, brother and brother-in-law, who loved his job and doing something which he believed in. He will be sincerely missed by all who knew him."
Funeral with full military honours was held on October 26, 2010 at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Bradford.
