Denise Roberta Carter of Charlottesville, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 7, 2010.

The daughter of the late Robert Carter and Christine Carter McMakin was born on May 7, 1967, in Charlottesville Virginia. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Ethel Carter; her father, Robert Carter; and a sister, Lisa Grooms.

Those who knew her, saw her as a strong, caring, loving mother and friend who had a big heart. She was a faithful member of Charlottesville Church of Christ, where she served as the Choir Director and on the Usher board. She enjoyed exercising and shopping and singing for the Lord. She was passionately known by her family as "Snake" she was always caring about others and never complaining.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her mother, Christine Carter-McMakin; one sister, Sandra Carter of Charlottesville; four brothers, Robert and Nathaniel Grooms of Louisa and Michael Brown and Antonio Jones of Charlottesville; one daughter, Kiara Carter; two sons, Christopher Carter and Shawn Bates Jr.; three aunts, Frances and Lavern Carter of Charlottesville and Connie Fountain of Louisa; four uncles, Johnny, James E., and James F. Carter of Charlottesville and Leroy Carter of Gordonsville; one niece, Quaneilia Carter; one great- niece, Nari Shifflett; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins, relatives and friends; and a dedicated cousin, Johnnie Carter of Buckingham.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Charlottesville Church of Christ, Fifth Street Southwest Extended, with Bishop Rufus Hayes officiating.

Interment at the Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery in Troy, Virginia.
