Edmund graduated from Yale, then trained as a lawyer, but made his mark in the world as one of the founding fathers of cotton manufacturing in New England (Chicopee, Mass.) and as a philanthropist who supported Horace Mann and the establishment of public education in Massachusetts. He also worked in his family's mercantile business and helped found the Western Rail Road which ran from Worcester, Mass. to Albany, N. Y.
