Clifford Vernon Reed Sr., 85, of St. Charles, Ill., formerly of Bella Vista, Ark., died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at his home. He was born Aug. 13, 1918, in Jefferson, Okla., to Mege Reed and Flossie Sayre Reed.
He was raised on a farm in Grant County, Okla. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936 and Tonkawa Junior College in 1938. He worked for Douglas Aircraft, then began military service in 1943. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a platoon sergeant in the 1 st Battalion of the 7 th Cavalry Regiment, 1 st Cavalry Division. He earned two Purple Hearts and was awarded the Bronze Star during combat action in the Philippines. After hostilities ceased, he was a member of the first U.S. military unit to enter Tokyo.
After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Oklahoma to farm. He served on the local school board, then returned to college. He earned a degree in education from Northwestern College in Alva, Okla., in 1956.
He quit farming and began a 26-year career in education, serving in a variety of roles. He was superintendent of schools for three districts: Offerle, Argonia and Wamego, Kan. He was recognized for distinguished service to education by the Kansas State Department of Education.
He and his wife retired to Bella Vista, Ark., where they lived from 1982 through May 2003, when they moved to St. Charles. While in Bella Vista, he was active in the Methodist Men's Fellowship Group, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He and his wife enjoyed fishing and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Mae Bradley; two daughters, Janet Elaine Reed and Jayne Eline Reed; a son, Clifford Vernon Reed Jr.; and a grandchild, Stacy Lynn Reed.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Una Arlene Reed, whom he married in June 1967; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley Lynn Reed and Ruth Reed of Marion, Kan., and Donald Steven Reed and Leslie Reed of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jewell "Julie" Nell Meridith and Randy Meridith of St. Charles; a sister, Ruby Fore of Medford, Okla.; a brother, Bernard "B. W." Reed of Enid, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, Amy Reed, Stephanie Thierbach, Kylie Reed, Allie Reed, Grayson Reed, Michelle Milo, Brad Meridith, Kris Menezes, Jana Marogil, Justin Reed and Leslie Byriel; and six great-grandchildren, Sayre and Ainslie Milo, Lindsay and Luke Menezes, and Paige and Adam Marogil.
