Here Early Monday


Mrs. Eleanor Suverly, 63, Mandan, ND, died early Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Harriet Schultz and son-in-law (Editor's note: by common law), Henry Schultz of Mandan.

Death was attributed to complications attendant upon age. She had been in poor health for a number of years and her condition became serious about three weeks ago.

She is survived by her aged father, John Clark of Bismarck, ND; 4 sons, John of Hazelton, ND, George of rural Mandan, ND, Earl of Hazelton, ND, and William "Bill" of Spokane, WA; 6 daughters, Harriet (Henry) Schultz, Olive (Robert) Wuertz, Isabel (Evert) Tillotson, all of Mandan, Lucy (Phillip L.) Ludwig of Livona, Emmons County, ND, Clara (Charles) Weller of Ketchum, OK, and Shirley (Hubert) Burtts of Bismarck, 26 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian church of Bismarck.

Suverly Funeral
Held Wednesday


Funeral Services for Mrs. Eleanor Suverly, 63, long-time resident of the Mandan vicinity, who died in Mandan, Monday, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday from the Presbyterian church here. Rev. G.W. Stewart officiated.

Active pallbearers were Charles Clark, Dennis Casey, Joseph Gilman, John R. Stewart, Amos Robidou, and John Crawford.

Honorary pallbearers were Stewart Woodworth, Erwin Small, Charles Swensen, Duncan McGillis, and George Laney.

The body lay in state at the Kennelly Funeral Parlors in Mandan until the time of the funeral. Buried.

Was Pioneer settler of the Gayton District – funeral held Wednesday.

Mrs. Sherm Suverly, pioneer settler of the Gayton community passed away at the home of her daughter in Mandan Monday morning at 2:30 o'clock. She had been ill for some time. She was 63 years old.

Mrs. Suverly had lived in the Gayton community almost all her life and was well known throughout the county. Following the death of her husband several years ago, she went to Mandan to live with her 2 daughters. She is survived by 6 daughters and 4 sons. They are Mrs. Harriet "Hattie" Schultz and Mrs. Isabelle Tillotson of Mandan, Mrs. Shirley Burtts of Bismarck, Mrs. Lucy Ludwig of Gayton, Mrs. Clara Weller, living in Oklahoma, and Olive, address not available at this time; John of Moffit, George and William of Mandan, and Earl, address not available at this time.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church in Bismarck, conducted by Rev. G.W. Stewart, and burial was made in the cemetery in Bismarck beside the graves of members of her family. The old settlers along the river. They were: Charles Clark, Dennis Casey, Joseph Gilman, John R. Stewart, Amos Robidou, and John Crawford. (Editor's note: these 6 people must have been pallbearers.) These folks were the friends and neighbors of Sherman and Eleanor (Clark) Suverly.

She married Sherman S. "Shaney" Suverly on December 25, 1894 in (Editor's note: now former town of) Emmonsburg, Emmons County, ND. Sherman and Elenora Clark were married at Grandpa Clark's, a farmstead near Emmonsburg. Witnesses were Janie Clark and James Bursbser. Sherman S. "Shaney" Suverly was born December 29, 1867 in Knoxville, MO. Christened in 7th Day Adventist. Sherman Suverly died of Brights Disease – source is Olive Suverly, his daughter. Died on March 20, 1935 at home, in Bismarck, ND.

Emmonsburg was a pioneer settlement in the SouthWest quarter of Section 14-132-79, at the mouth of Big Beaver Creek on the east bank of the Missouri River. It was named for its county, which was named for James A. Emmons, a native of Virginia who came to Dakota in 1872 as the post trader at Camp Hancock. The post office was established October 17, 1883 with Harmidas Archambault as Postmaster, and closed November 30, 1912 with mail to Hartford. It reopened September 3, 1924 with Mrs. Sophie Ketchum as Postmaster, and closed for good November 30, 1934 with mail to Livona. A population of 28 was reported in 1890, a count of 40 was made in 1930, and the last report was a count of 25 in 1940.(1, 2, 3, 18, 25, 40, 66, 415)

The Suverly family burial site was moved from Art Grove Cemetery to Glencoe/Sloan Cemetery by order of the Federal Government. The land their burial site was located at was sold to the Army Corp. of Engineers and later flooded by the Oahu Reclamation, due to the construction of the Garrison Dam.
