W.A. Lucking Dies;
Ex-Attorney for Ford
William A. Lucking, a Detroit attorney who was a legal advisor for Henry Ford in the early days of the Ford Motor Co., died yesterday in St. Joseph Hospital, Ann Arbor, apparently of a heart attack.
Mr. Lucking, 78, of 811 Barton Shore Drive, Ann Arbor, was president of the Chicago, Duluth and Georgian Bay Transit Co., operator of the Great Lakes cruise ships North American and South American.
He graduated from the University of Michigan and was a member of the Michigan, the California, and the American Bar Associations. He was also a member of the Country Club of Detroit, the Detroit Athletic Club, the Detroit Boat Club and the Barton Hills Country Club of Ann Arbor.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; a brother, Dean; a son, William A. Jr.; and a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Starbuck, both of California; a stepson, Joseph Powell, of Ann Arbor, and nine grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Lucking will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the William R. Hamilton Co., 3975 Cass. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Steamer Line, Once Owned Paper
William A. Lucking, president of a steamship line and colorful Ann Arbor attorney, died at his home, 811 Barton Shore Dr., Barton Hills, last night at the age of 78.
Mr. Lucking had been president of the Georgian Bay Line, which operates the Great Lakes cruise ships S.S. North American and S.S. South American since 1947.
Although his law practice was in Detroit, Mr. Lucking started several notable suits in the Washtenaw County circuit court.
Brought Against City
One of these suits sought to stop the city of Ann Arbor from furnishing fire services to the University until the Legislature paid for such services.
Lucking later amended the suit to ask that University buildings not being used solely for education purposed be subject to city taxation. This was in 1946.
In 1950, Lucking brought suit in the federal court to stop the construction of the 500 bed Veteran's Hospital at Glacier Way and Fuller Rd. The suit was dismissed on the grounds that the government has immunity to such action and the hospital was built.
Lucking and Milford A. Boersma, owner of Boersma Travel Service, were receivers of the now-defunct weekly newspaper, the Washtenaw Post-Tribune; the paper ceased publication on Nov. 9, 1951.

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Mr. Lucking handled some of the litigation during the early days of the Ford Motor Co. He was a member of the Detroit Country Club, the Detroit Athletic Club, and the Detroit Boat Club.
Surviving besides his wife, Nancy is a son, William A. Lucking, Jr.; a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Starbuck, a brother, Dean Lucking, a stepson, Joseph Powell, and nine grandchildren.
