She was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran church. When 18 she came to this country, settling in Brooklyn.
Josephine Fredericka Mattsen was the daughter of John and Charlotta Mattsen.
Born on 18 August 1854 at Falkoping, Vastra Gotaland County, Sweden.
Married on 28 April 1875 to Claus T Carlson, a fellow countryman, in Poweshiek County, Iowa.
To this union five children were born. Hilda W, Carl Albert, John N, Anna H and Effa M.
On son, Carl Albert, died in 1881 at the age of 3.
