Bertha Augusta Schaupp Weber died Friday, July 15, 1983, at the Dunlap Care Center where she has made her home since 1979.

Bertha, daughter of Emille Handke and Jacob Schaupp was born Jan. 28, 1892, in Underwood, Iowa. She was one of eight children, Henry, Carl, John, Fred, Eddie, Lydia and Mary.

The Schaupp family lived in Underwood, Woodbine and Charter Oak before coming to Dunlap to farm in 1902. Bertha attended country school and later kept house for her brothers. In February 1913 she married Louis J. Weber and they farmed until 1936 when they moved to Dunlap. Her husband predeceased her in October 1952.

Church has been an important part of Bertha's life. As a little girl, she remembers going to meetings with her parents which led to the organization of the Lutheran Church in Dunlap. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Dunlap, April 8, 1906 by Rev. Wendt. Bertha cared for the Communion service for 32 years as well as the Altar paraments, linens and flowers. She embroidered the baptismal napkins, given to the infants, for 12 years.

Bertha also played the piano and furnished the music for church services for about 20 years. She is a charter member of the Lutheran Church Women. She and Lou were frequent hosts to the many supply pastors who have served the Dunlap church over the years.

Though Bertha had no children of her own, she was "Auntie Bert" to many nieces and nephews and friends to who she endeared herself.

In October 1979, when unable to care for herself and with increased failing eyesight, she moved to the Dunlap Care Center.

Her brothers, Henry, Fred, Carl, Eddie, John and sister Lydia predeceased Bertha. She is survived by sister, Mary Von Ahnen, also a resident of the Dunlap Care Center.

Funeral services for Bertha A. Weber were held Sunday, July 17, 1983, at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. Rev. C. W. Berggren officiated at the 2:00 p.m. service. Music was provided by Mrs. LaDonna Schaupp Cook and organist Mrs. Wendell Berggren.

Pallbearers were William E. Schaupp, Fritz Baldwin, John Weber, Merle Cook, Earl Weber, Ray Weber. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap.
