He entered the service with the U.S. Army Coast Artillery on November 7, 1942 at Fort MacArthur, CA. After advanced training at Camp Irwin in the Mojave Desert, CA. He was assigned to the 195th Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Battalion attached to the 2nd Armored Division - "Hell on Wheels."
Further training in Hampshire, England in June 1944d, then to Omaha Beach on D-Day +6. The settled in on the beach head for 25 days. Next was St. Lo, France, then to Belgium, Holland and into Germany until the end of the Ardennes Campaign in January 1945. After several other encounters, Frank was honorably discharged at Fort MacArthur, CA. He received the Bronze Star medal for his part in the April 12, 1945 capture of 15 enemy officers, along with a Unit Citation and other awards.
