Hastings, William

Birth Date: 21 Feb. 1824
Death Date: 8 Oct. 1882
Gender: Male
Age: 35 at time of crossing
Company: Unidentified Companies (1859)

Pioneer Information:
Evidence from emigration and church records proves that William and his wife Sarah traveled to Utah in 1859. Further research is needed to determine the name of the company they traveled with.

He married Sarah Jane Smith in Boston. They met at the hotel she was working in as a pastry chef. They met and 13 days later they were married on April 16, 1859, that summer they left traveling in the Edward Stevensen Company wagon train arriving in SLC Utah 16 Sept 1859. They settled in Grafton, UT November 1861 during a harsh winter and with no home they lived in their wagon box for the entire winter. They had 8 children (with 2 sets of identical twins). William died at an early age with chills and a fever and after spending 5 weeks in bed, he died 8 Nov 1882. They said he died because the necessities of living were so scarce. This illustrates how food was at times scarce and conditions difficult to say the least.
