In my notes he died 5 June 1943 on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea but the source is missing. So at this point it stays in the notes.

I found another source that confirms the source I can't find: His squadron's papers state that they were on a strike on the Kahili Harbor the day, 5 June 1943, that he is reported missing in action. The same report states 1 killed and 3 others missing, but doesn't state who. Note the report lists his name as Wayne Lowell Moore[sic], 638 07 71, the number is his and else where in the papers he is listed with the correct name. He is listed as dead in 1946, so did he die immediately, 5 June 1943, or sometime afterwards.

"LT(jg) Snell (pilot) was seen by LT Livezey to be attacking right behind him and after pulling out was seen to be attacked by four Zeros. LT(jg) Weiss believes Snell to be shot down but didn't actually see this. Also MIA are AOM2c Wayne Lowell Wood and ARM2c Reginald Leon Drake." contributed by FG member Torpedo Squadron 11 #48028139 / 23Jan2020
