After his ordination in San Francisco, Father John spent several years teaching at Columbus College in White Plains, New York, followed by many years at the Vatican in Turin, Italy pursing religious work. After that time, according to his death certificate, he spent four years in Western Australia and five years in Victoria at the Salesian College at Rupertswood, prior to his death of pneumonia at the age of 55.

Father John Setaro was the first Salesian to die in Australia in 1933. He was buried in the Sunbury public cemetery. The plot became neglected as it was some distance from Rupertswood, and it became evident that the Salesians needed their own cemetery. A peaceful spot on the bend in Jackson's Creek was selected as it was very close to the life of the community and college.
After everything was prepared the exhumation and reburial took place on 22nd June 1956, with each deceased being buried with his own headstone.
