Sherman E. Mathias, 77, of Mechanicsburg died at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at his home with his family by his side.
Sherman was born June 17, 1930, in Brownstown, the son of James and Cleta Bolt Mathias. He married Doris June Patrick on March 7, 1955, in Niantic at his parents' home. He was of the Christian faith.
He worked at Buckhart Sand & Gravel for 40 years and was a life member of the Local 965 Operating Engineers. He also was a member of the Family Tradition Band. He loved country music, fishing and hunting, trap shooting and playing music with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Wagner; and grandson, Roger Dale Patrick Jr.
He is survived by his wife, June; sons, Roger Mathias (wife, Pam) of San Antonio, Maurice Mathias (wife, Connie) of Mount Auburn, Rick Mathias (wife, Kathy) of Mechanicsburg and Tim Mathias (wife, Debbie) of Taylorville; daughters, Rosemary Bennett (husband, Jerry) of Lake City and Janice Syson of Springfield; 12 grandchildren, Helen, Melanie (husband, John), Crystal (husband, Ted), Brianne (husband, Joe), Morgan, Brett, Ashley (fiance, Michael) and Melissa, Rick, Mike, Aaron and Jessica; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Brianna, Chase, Olivia, Teagan and Nichole; three brothers, Lewis Mathias (wife, Peg), Norman Mathias (wife, Donna) and James Mathias (wife, Donna); two sisters, Wanda Kay Patient (husband, Larry) and Virginia Stacy (husband, Roy); and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at Fullenwider-Park Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dana Jumper officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Buckhart.
