James A. Carrell was a son of John Harrison Carrell (of Kentucky) and Catherine E. Laughlin (of Indiana) or Martha Scynthia Laughlin (according to Bill Harrison). James was one of 15 children.

James A. Carrell first married Mary Ann Heddins, daughter of John & Catherine (Carpenter) Heddins, on 6 Sept. 1866 in Cumberland County, Illinois. James & Mary Ann had six known children together: Thomas, Luther, Eleazer, Permelia, Edwin & Seth Carrell.

After Mary Ann died, James married Hepsy J. Starbuck. With his second wife he had these children: Letha (died in infancy), Ross (married Sidney P. Brewer in 1906), Charles, & Horra M. Carrell.
