Musician, Composer. Born Thomas Richard Fogerty, one of five sons of Edith Lucile Lytle and Galen Robert Fogerty, a typesetter, in Berkeley, California. In high school, he joined a band, Spider Webb & the Insects, who did well enough to win a contract with Del-Fi Records, but they broke up in late 1959 before they released any recording. He then joined his brother John's band, The Blue Velvets, as lead singer and they cut three singles for the Orchestra label in 1961 and 1962. After signing with Fantasy Records, the label forced a name change on the band, and as The Golliwogs, they cut 7 singles between 1964 and 1967, on which he shared lead vocals with his brother. By late 1967, they changed direction under John's influence, and the name of the band was changed to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Over the next three years, they released six albums including 'Bayou Country' and 'Green' River,' and just as many top ten singles, including 'Suzie Q,' 'Bad Moon Rising,' 'Down on the Corner,' 'Run Through the Jungle,' and 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain.' John had taken over lead vocals and Tom played rhythm guitar and sang backup. Tension between the brothers lead to Tom's departure from the band in January 1971, shortly after the release of 'Pendulum.' His first solo album 'Tom Fogerty' (1972) charted at number 78, it would be his most successful solo release. He continued to record throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including three albums with the band Ruby. The members of CCR reunited only once, at Tom's wedding in 1980; the estrangement between the brothers was never resolved. After moving to Scottsdale, Arizona, he underwent back surgery, and an unscreened blood transfusion led to an HIV infection. After also contracting tuberculosis, he succumbed to respiratory failure at the age of 48. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 as a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival. A compilation album, 'The Very Best of Tom Fogerty,' was released in 1999.
