He was born in Little Falls, was raised in Owatonna and, as a star football player for the high school team, set the school's scoring record in 1923. He was known as the "Owatonna Thunderbolt".
While a Minnesota Gopher, he led the Big Ten Conference in scoring with 13 touchdowns and 78 points as a junior. He tied Red Grange's single-season scoring. His teammates voted him team captain for the 1927 season.
