John Harper also helped raise his orphaned nephews, Fielding and George Hanks, children of his deceased sister, Sarah and brother-in-law-law Abraham Hanks, parents of Nancy Hanks, mother of the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Sarah, Abraham and later Nancy each died from drinking milk from a cow that ate snake root.
