MRS. JUDGE MCDONNELL

The Grim Reaper again had entered a home in our community and removed a loved one in the person of Mrs. Grace McDonnell. Mrs. McDonnell's health had been failing for more than two years but it was not until last July that her condition grew alarming.

She was taken to the hospital in Iowa City at once where she was treated for nearly three months, all to no avail and in October she was brought to her home in Lincoln township, the place which she loved best in all the world, to spend her remaining days.

Here she has been most tenderly cared for by her family until the end came peacefully Monday at 8:30 o'clock after a cheerful happy Sabbath with her family.

Grace Pearl, daughter of James Newton and Lenna Hixson Carson, was born in English township February 22, 1891, and passed away at her home in Lincoln township May 10, 1948, at the age of 57 years, two months and 18 days. She was educated in the Lucas county public schools and her teachers and schoolmates remember her as a gentle winsome child.

Through the years she developed into a loved and respected citizen, a result of the co-ordination of a Christian home, her church and the schools, together with the natural qualities inherent to her, all of which endeared her to all who knew her.

On February 16, 1916, she was married to Judge McDonnell. They established their home on a farm in English township where they lived for two years, then moved to the farm where the remainder of her life has been spent. Her home was indeed her palace and her industry and thrift, coupled with affection and good judgement, made it a real haven of rest and peace to her family and to her friends.

They were the parents of one child, a sweet little girl, Marlene, who grew into young womanhood and is now the wife of George Rosa. They, with the husband and father have been in constant attendance upon Mrs. McDonnell during her entire illness and her brave, patient, ever thoughtful spirit will be a source of much comfort to them in the lonely days ahead.

Besides the husband, the daughter and son-in-law, she leaves her mother, Mrs. Lenna Carson, of Williamson, and one sister, Mrs. Beulah Clevenger, of near Derby, and many other relatives and friends. Her father passed away in 1939.

In early girlhood Grace united with the Christian church and was always loyal to that faith. She and her husband at one time aligned themselves with a community organization at Beulah in order that they might have a part in the activities of their home neighborhood and she was always ready and willing to do her part in any worth while public enterprise. For years she had been secretary of the Franklin School District, which post she held at the time of her passing.

Thus a beautiful life has ended and to us it seems too short but its contribution to her home, to her community and to the world at large cannot be measured.

Funeral services, in charge of a friend of the family, Rev. Archie Beals, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Beardsley funeral home in Chariton, with interment in the Chariton cemetery. Casket bearers were cousins of the deceased, Bruce Carson, Dewey Carson, Earl Carson, Truman Carson, Maurice Carson and Chester Miller.

The singers were Mesdames May Patterson and Mildred Sanders and the hymns were favorites of Mrs. McDonnell, "Going Down the Valley," " Where the Gates Swing Outward Never," and "Will the Circle be Unbroken."
