He enlisted on 23 June 1865, in Philadelphia, and was discharged on 22 June 1868 at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, from Company I, 3rd US Cavalry. He reenlisted on 21 July 1868, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and was initially assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry. He was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, with blue eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion. He was also illiterate. Killed on Last Stand Hill, his remains were buried in the mass grave, marked by the Battlefield Monument.
