Private, Company A, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, along with General Custer and most of the 7th US Cavalry.

The oldest son of Joshua and Matilda Faunce Armstrong of Marie Street, Philadelphia. John married Martha Hancock on August 27, 1856, in Philadelphia. Their daughter, Mary Emma (Gillhouse) was born 26 January 1861. He enlisted into the Union Army in 1862, and when he was discharged on 25 August 1865, he returned to Philadelphia to find his wife and daughter living with another man, Jacob Marker, and his wife "in a family way." He immediately enlisted the same day into Company G, 6th US Cavalry, and was sent to New Orleans, LA, where he worked as a Saddler. On 2 April 1875, he reenlisted into the 7th Cavalry. He was 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches tall, with blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, his company was assigned to Major Reno's Battalion, and he was killed in the valley, just prior to Reno's retreat. His mutilated body, missing his head, was found in the valley, and his head was later found in the lower part of the Indian village. His remains were moved to the mass grave on Last Stand Hill, and are buried under the Battlefield Monument.
