U.S. Navy Lieutenant Delroy Virnig died during World War II in a plane crash in California. Lt. Virnig was in the Navy Air Corps. He was the son of Henry John and Catherine E Virnig. In the 1940 census, records say he had a brother Clayton and a sister Jeanne. He was born in Chokio, MN. He had been a business major at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He took his first training at the Corpus Christi, Texas, Naval Air Station. He was stationed at Naval Air Station, Los Alamitos, CA, and records say he collided with an AAF PT-19A at Hemet, Ryan Field, CA, and he and another officer, Donald MacLea, died in the crash. Apparently, he was the pilot in this training mission. Records of the Stevens County Historical Society and an obit in a St. Louis paper say he was married to Marjorie Meyer. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Meyers.
