US Congresswoman. A member of the Democratic Party, she served Missouri's 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 2005. Raised in Kansas, she received her BA from the University of Kansas, and later attained a MA from the University of Missouri, while serving as an English teacher. In addition, she earned a MBA from the University of Kansas, and attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She was elected to and served in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1977 to 1995. During her tenure in the United States Congress, she was a proponent of Medicare's expansion of prescription drug coverage, women's rights, public education and environmental causes. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
