Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist. He was honored in 1992 for inventing a method to count and classify sub-atomic particles generated within an electron particle accelerator. Born in a Polish village now within the Ukraine, he was raised in Paris from age seven; during World War II he was active in the French Resistance, though he was arrested in 1943 and held in Dachau from 1944 until the end of the conflict. Charpak became a French citizen in 1946, earned a master's degree in mining engineering in 1948, and took his doctorate from the College of France in 1954. He joined the Geneva-based European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in 1959 and in 1961 was able to demonstrate that a mumon is merely a heavy electron, not a separate entity. Dr. Charpak created the multiwire proportional chamber for which he was to receive the Nobel in 1968; he was later to perform research with x-rays that resulted in a method to monitor an astronaut's cardiac status, and to improve cancer treatment. Named to the French Academy of Sciences in 1985, he retired from CERN in 1991. In 2004, he co-authored "Debunked" in which he labled ESP, telekinesis, astrology, and other psychic phoenominae as spurious pseudoscience. Dr. Charpak's "official" birthdate is August 1, 1924, though he was to declare the date given above correct.
