Derby School Leader Dies

Retired in April; Ill Several Months

Paul Baird Cooper, 65, Derby, retired superintendent of Derby schools, died Wednesday at Wesley Hospital after several months' illness.

He had retired in April after serving 10 years as superintendent of schools. Paul B. Cooper School in Oaklawn was named in his honor.

He was born Jan. 5, 1893, at Auburn, Neb. He married May. Boughton May 10, 1918, at Emporia, Kan.

Mr. Cooper received a Bachelor's Degree from Kansas State Teachers. College, Emporia, and a Master's Degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.

He was a veteran of World War I, having served in France with the Corps of Army Engineers. He was a member of Derby Presbyterian Church.

Active in School Groups


Mr. Cooper was past president of the Sedgwick County Association of Secondary School Administrators. He was a member of the Sedgwick County Teachers Assn., Kansas State Teachers Assn., National Educators Assn., American Association of School Administrators, Derby Teachers Assn. and the Lions Club.

Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Mrs. Clarice May McGraw, Hutchinson, Kan.; a son, Warren B., 1907 S. Volutsia; five sisters, Mrs. Arthur Oberman, Escondido, Calif., Mrs. Tracy Boughton, Emporia, Miss Catherine Cooper, Seattle, Wash, Mrs. M. D. Garwood, Lakeside, Ore., and Miss Helen Cooper, Redlands, Calif.; two brothers, Robert, Portland, Ore., and Harold, Escondido; and four grandchildren.

Services Set

Private funeral services will be held at the Cooper home, 102 N. Georgie, at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Richard Klein, pastor of Derby First Presbyterian Church, will officiate.

Memorial services will be held at Derby First Presbyterian Church at 4 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Mr. Klein officiating.

Burial will be in Wichita Park Cemetery.

Mulvane Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
