LIFE'S LABORS ENDED

EAST LAS VEGAS, N. M., Aug. 30, '93.
EDITOR OF EMPORIA REPUBLICAN--It is with deep sorrow and painful consciousness of the great loss which her family and friends have sustained, that I report to you the death of Mrs. Lewis Lutz so long and favorably known in your city. This sad event took place at 2:30 o'clock on the morning of Friday, the 25th day of August, after a painful illness of thirty-five days' illness.

The deceased was born at Circleville, Ohio, on the 30th day of April, 1830, and had been married to her surviving and now sorrowing husband forty-four years. Six children blessed this union, two of whom preceded the mother to the grave, while of the other four, all married, one resides in California, and three in New Mexico. Mrs. Lutz was reared in the Evangelical Lutheran church and connected herself with that body in early life, but removing to Emporia and finding no church of that denomination, in 1871, she connected herself with the Congregationalists, remaining a faithful and consistent member to the end of her life. Her piety was not ostentatious nor of the character to seek expression in the public fields of church effort, but it showed itself in an undoubting faith in the truthfulness of the Christian religion, and a child-like confidence in the rewards of eternity. One of her last expressions was a desire that her family should hold by the faith to which she had given her heart and her hopes.

Her virtues were pre-eminently domestic. With no ambition for social success or display, she found her pleasure in her home and her duty in careing (sic) for the members of her own fireside or the sick and needy in her own neighborhood. The faith, purity and charity of her character were seen in every action and word, while her kindness and Christian love towards neighbors and friends made her a favorite with all; yet it was within the family circle that the virtues of this excellent woman shone most conspicuously. As wife and mother she exhausted the treasures of her mind and heart, and none can miss her so much as they with tearful eyes and bleeding hearts bear testimony that her life was one continued exhibition of self-forgetfulness in behalf of her loved ones. She has gone to her reward, but to the members of her family her place can never be filled.

In a few months her remains will be removed to Maplewood cemetery, Emporia; in the meantime they will rest here in the Masonic cemetery.

D. Thomas

$1,000 PAID BY K. AND L. OF H.

Mrs. Lewis Lutz, an estimable lady, formerly of this city, died recently in East Las Vegas, N. M., where, for a number of years, she had resided. She was a member of the Order of Knights and Ladies of Honor of this city, and held a life policy for $1,000 in the order which amount was paid to her beneficiary yesterday by Mrs. Laura J. Freeman, secretary and treasurer of this lodge. The order throughout the country, appears to be in a flourishing condition and all the members of Martha Washington lodge should keep up their dues as they cannot now get as cheap life insurance anywhere else.
