He ran the Cherokee Strip in 1893, staking a 160 acre claim northeast of Blackwell, Oklahoma, 16 Sep 1893. Settled in Vernon Township, Kay County, Range 1E, Township 28N, SW 1/4 of Section 17. Later when oil was being drilled in the area, the first shallow oil well of the Dilworth field was brought in north of where they lived.

They were married in his parents-in-law's home.
