William Washington Bagwell, of Banner, Mississippi, was married to Mary Etta DeWeese, the daughter of Oklahoma homesteaders. They moved from Oklahoma to Kansas along with the railroad. Over the years, they had 13 children, and after losing two sets of twins in infancy, raised nine to adulthood.

"Wash," as he was known, was a gifted musician who played violin, piano, and organ. He was music director at his church and had a powerful tenor voice. Wash was known as a Jack of all trades who could do or fix just about anything. He retired from the railroad and owned a general store in Lansing, Kansas, for a number of years.
