Irene was the daughter of William Arckless and Fanny Arckless nee Pinder, of Carlisle.

A Second Officer ARCKLESS with the Air Transport Auxiliary.

Casualty of War: Irene was accidentally killed while on duty. Her remains were buried at Stanwix Cemetery.

Irene was an ordinary working-class girl who, by sheer enthusiasm and determination, and with the help of the subsidised Civil Air Guard Scheme, learnt to fly in the years before WWII. She managed to amass over 53 hours solo between 1937 and 1939.

She applied to join the ATA after national advertisements called for experienced female fliers. Starting her letter 'I would very much like to join the ATA, my fiancé (Flt Lt Lockyer) is a prisoner of war in Germany, unable to fly his beloved spitfires, I wish to do my bit'

On the afternoon of Sunday 3 Jan 1943, her Oxford V3888 crashed onto a house on the outskirts of Cambridge when an engine cut during take-off. She was taken to Addenbrooks but pronounced dead on arrival.
