Mary was the daughter of Gilbert Marcus Stone and Axey Adeline Lucas. Mary’s mother died when she was an infant, her father became a prominent man in Allegan County, Michigan. Gilbert didn’t remarry until 1856; since Mary did not appear in the 1860 census with Gilbert and his 2nd wife, it is expected that Gilbert left his infant daughter in the care of his parents where she is found listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Loraine County, Ohio (her father’s birthplace) in Jonas and Elizabeth Stone’s home.

The large monument is marked D. A. R. (her great grandfather was in the American Revolution).
