ADELINE GARNET SCHACHER
July 21, 1919 - Sept. 30, 2010

SALEM, Ore. - Adeline Garnet Schacher was born in Sisseton, South Dakota, to Albert and Gudrun Tostenson. At the age of 26, she married the love of her life, Vernie Schacher. They lived on a farm in Sisseton, and there raised four sons and three daughters. Over the next several years they experienced not only the depression but also the hard times of the dust bowl. In 1963 they sold the farm and moved their family to Salem, buying a home on 19th St NE. In addition to being a mother of seven children, Adeline also worked for many years at Kelley Farquhar Cannery. In spite of working full time, her home was spotless and she was known for always having fresh baked cookies for all the kids in the neighborhood. Adeline was a faithful member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church where she was involved in bible study and knitting prayer shawls. Being of Norwegian heritage she was also the Queen of the Lefse making each fall for the church fundraiser, using a generational recipe. She was predeceased by her husband, Vernie to whom she was married for 63 years; brothers, Norbert and Almond; and sisters, Gladys and Ruth. Adeline is survived by siblings, Arnold of Minn. and Genevieve and Clarance of S.D.; daughters, Virginia Schacher of Calif., Debe Hooyman (Dennis) of Idaho, and Elaine Schacher of Salem; sons, Alan of Eugene, Duane (Ellen), Dan (Debbie) and Larry, all of Salem; grandchildren, Kelly McCarty (Daren), Heidi Schacher, Lindsey Schacher and David Schacher; along with two great-grandchildren, Conner and Sydney McCarty. Adeline led a full life enjoying family and friends. She would frequently say "I can't understand if my children are all over fifty, why I am only thirty-nine?" Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605 Commercial St SE, Salem. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church (corner of Sunnyview & Lansing NE) followed by a reception. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens, W. Salem. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Adeline's memory. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
