from the Rutland Daily Herald, June 24, 1932:
George W. Kenney, 87, Grand Army veteran, died suddenly at his home 106 Church street yesterday morning after a short illness. There are now only three surviving Civil War veterans in Rutland. Mr. Kenney was employed by the Rutland railroad for 67 years.
He was born in Guilford on February 19, 1845, the son of George W. and Roxana Tyler Kenney. His early education was obtained in the public schools of Guilford. He later was graduated from Weathersfield academy.
In 1863, he enlisted as a member of Company G, 17th Vermont volunteer infantry. He entered the war as a private and was discharged as a corporal. He saw action in 14 engagements from the Battle of Wilderness to Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
Following his war service Mr. Kenney entered the employ of the Rutland railroad as a fireman, in which capacity he served for five years. He then was promoted to engineer, a rank he held for 15 years. In 1882, he was made division master mechanic with headquarters at White River Junction. Nine years later, he came to Rutland in the same capacity, serving until May, 1896. He was later made superintendent of rolling stock for the entire railroad, which position he held at the time of his death.
Mr. Kenney was a charter member of Lincoln post, G.A.R., of White River Junction. He had also served as commander of Roberts post, this city. At the time of his death he held the office of quartermaster.
Less than a month ago, Mr. Kenney was one of the two Grand Army men who led the Memorial Day parade. He marched from the Grand Army hall to the armory and from the armory to the West street cemetery.
Mr. Kenney is survived by two sons, Fred B. Kenney of Welland, Ont., and George K. Kenney of Rutland; a daughter, Mrs. R.D. Beales of this city; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lowell D. Kenney, who made her home with him for the past few years; also two grandchildren, Robert and Richard Kenney of this city.
Private funeral services will be held at his late home at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Rev. J. Graydon Brown will officiate. The burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
