Francis Michael "Mick" Wolgast, 78, of Pine Beach, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

He was the Scheduling Manager for Pan American World Airways, New York City, for 35 years, retiring in 1991.

Born in New York City, he grew up in Washington Heights and moved to Pine Beach in 1972.

He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in New York City and then served in the New York National Guard for two years.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1953-1956 as an Airman First Class and was awarded both the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He was a Past Vice Commodore of Beachwood Yacht Club, and a past Advisor to the Junior Sailing Program. He loved being out on the water and spent many fun years at BYC.

He loved to travel and took his family on many memorable vacations. He was an avid reader and always had a book by his side. He loved the warm weather and spent many wonderful days at the beach and by the pool. He always enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's soccer and sporting events and activities and each year looked forward to the Quarter Keg Classic softball game.

He had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke. Mick was a true New Yorker. He loved his family, his friends, the New York Giants-especially when they were winning!, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, St. Anthony-who found everything that he lost, Jesus Christ and everything Irish. He was a great storyteller, especially of times spent growing up with his buddies in Washington Heights.

He was predeceased by his beloved aunt, Delia O'Gara, in 1990 and his brother, Michael John Wolgast, in 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carol; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Michael Plosica of Monmouth Beach, and Eileen and Joseph Hetrick of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Jennifer Wolgast of Pine Beach. He was an awesome Pop to his six grandchildren who brought him so much joy: Morgan, Riley, Meredith, Brett, Kate and his newest grandson, Jack. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Patricia Notholt of North Bergen; niece, Patricia Notholt of Lodi; nephew, Greg Notholt and his wife, Deborah, of Bradley Beach; and nephew, Michael Wolgast of New York City. Mick leaves behind countless friends and neighbors who loved him dearly.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 5, at 9:30am at Saint Barnabas R.C. Church, Woodland Road, Bayville, NJ. Burial service will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ at 11:30am.
