SCPO Oscar Garland, USN(Ret.), 88, of the 100 block of W. Leicester Ave., Norfolk, VA, passed away October 3, 2010, in his home.

A native of Yonkers, NY, he was the son of the late George and Rose Garland, and the widower of Anna M. Garland. He retired in 1964 from the United States Navy as a Sr. Chief after 24 years of service. He also retired from Civil Service at the Naval Supply Center. He was a WWII US Naval veteran, a Pearl Harbor survivor and a member of the Pearl Harbor Association, the American Legion, Fleet Reserve Association, VFW and the Ocean View Democratic Club. He was an avid fisherman and an ODU Lady Monarch basketball fan.

He is survived by his daughter, Jade D. Garland and husband Bruce Midgett of Rodanthe, NC; two sons, Forrest G. Garland and wife Harriet and Russell S. Garland, both of Virginia Beach, VA; twelve grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by four children, Terry Garland, Lloyde Ann Edwards, Gregory Garland, and Morgan Fredette; one grandchild, Ashley Fredette; and a brother, Jimmy Garland.

A graveside service will be conducted with military honors on Friday at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 600 Children's Way, Norfolk, VA 23517.
