Levi was the son of Solomon Cochran and Beulah Viets. Around 1805, his family, along with several uncles and aunts and his grandmother, Rhoda Ferguson Cochran, settled in Aurora, Ohio. His grandfather, John Cochran, had died en route in Buffalo, N Y. and his body was brought to Aurora.

Levi was an ordained minister of the Methodist-Episcopal Church for which he was a "traveling preacher". He married Lydia Cheesman and they had four children-Solomon, Cynthia, Sophrona, and Elizabeth. In 1842, his profession took him to Pleasant Prairie, Wisc. where his two eldest children married. He continued to travel, often being stationed in a different town each year. In 1855, he was elected Deacon and in 1859, he located in Lansing, Iowa, where he died. His body was taken by train to Kenosha Co., Wisconsin for burial.
