In 1902 there was an epidemic of diphtheria in Joseph City. The Hansens had been to Utah where they must haye been exposed to the disease. When they returned, Horace went to visit with Clara Hansen, who was his age and an inseparable friend, and he must have caught the disease from her. All of our family had this dreadful disease, even mother. Horace, who was eight years old at the time, caught the disease which soon turned to bronchial pneumonia and he passed away. At the time of his death, father was on the freight road which was his main source of livelihood. Aunt Eliza and one or two of the other women who lived nearby was all the help mother had. This was our first experience with death. No one dared to come in and no funeral was held when Horace died because diphtheria was so contagious. No help was available because people were all afraid they would contract diphtheria. It was a terribly lonesome time -a time of sorrow and loneliness for dear mother.
