Former University of Michigan Athletic Director. Born in Chicago, he attended the University of Michigan and became a star on the track team, with his specialty being the high jump. He held the school record for the high jump and was a conference and NCAA champion in the event. Future U of M football play-by-play voice Bob Ufer was a teammate.

He became an assistant coach at U of M in 1946 and was promoted two years later to head track coach, where over the next twenty years he would win twelve Big Ten track and field championships.

During this tenure, he also served as a U.S. Army consultant and helped coach an African track team in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. In 1968, he was named to replace Fritz Crisler as Athletic Director at U of M. He would go on to revolutionize the marketing of college athletics in general and college football in particular.

In 1975, Michigan Stadium began a streak of consecutive games with at least 100,000 in attendance that has not been broken. Assorted Michigan teams won 72 Big Ten championships during his tenure. Was responsible for the hiring of football coach Bo Schembechler and hockey coach Red Berenson. He retired in 1988 and concentrated on his industrial film business. The cause of death - complications following successful aortic surgery following a car accident in Ann Arbor.

The university's Natatorium, center of the school's powerhouse swimming and diving program, is named after him.
