Mr. Allen Hamilton Herndon Jr., age 73, of 2613 Queens Drive in Lincolnton, died on Thursday, September 30, 2010.

His funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 3, at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton with Rev. Dr. Stanley Spence officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:45 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Herndon was born July 2, 1937 in Rowan County to the late Allen H. Herndon Sr. and Lucille McGill Herndon.

He was a structural engineer. Mr. Herndon also served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Evalina Starnes Herndon of the home; two sons, Matthew Herndon and wife Brittney of Malabar, Fla., and Justin Allen Herndon of Grand Isle, Nebr.; two sisters, Laura Lynn Batelli of Hightown Va., and Mary Lee Godwin of Morriston, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Matison Lynn Herndon and William Hamilton Herndon.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, 201 Robin Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092, or to the Harris Hospice Unit, c/o Presbyterian Hospital, PO Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233.
