Esther was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Barnet) Kaufman of Maiden Creek, Berks County, PA. She was engaged in the iron industry. She purchased the Ellendale Forge in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, PA in 1876. Esther also owned the French Creek Forge in St. Peters, Chester County, PA. She lived in St. Peters with her sister Susan (Kaufman) Wanner.
