Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Scotland, he immigrated to the United States as a young boy with his family. Appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he graduated in the Class of 1863 (placing 2nd behind John Rogers Meigs), and was assigned as a 1st Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. As the Civil War was raging, his services in the field were needed immediately, he was posted to the Union forces operating around Charleston, South Carolina, serving as an assistant engineer. Transferred to the Army of the James, he eventually became first the Chief Engineer of that Army, then as Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers and Assistant Inspector General for the XXV Army Corps. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on January 1, 1865 for "meritorious services in 1864". After the end of the conflict he reverted back to his Regular Army rank of 1st Lieutenant. In 1867 he was promoted to Captain, and was assigned as a professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy (which is what the study of physics was known then) on the staff of West Point. He became a renowned scientist, earning degrees from Princeton University and Dartmouth. He published numerous scientific works, including "Wave Motion, relating to Sound and Light"(1882), "Analytical Mechanics"(1886), and "Hydromechanics"(1887). He also published "The Life and Letters of Emory Upton"(1885), which detailed the life of that Union General and military theorist. He served at West Point right up to his passing in 1901.
