Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He first served in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 12th New York State Militia. He then joined the staff of Major General Fitz John Porter as a Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General, and eventually became the Chief of Staff for the Army of the Potomac's V Corps. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 1, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the Battle of Five Forks, Virginia".
