Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of a Russian immigrant. When the Civil War began, he organized the 79th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Camp Dennison, Ohio and was elected as Colonel of the regiment. The 79th Ohio was attached to the Army of the Cumberland and was primarily used for guarding rivers, protecting railroads, and driving out guerilla bands in Tennessee until 1864. The regiment then marched to the sea under Major General William Sherman, participated in the Siege of Atlanta, and the Battles of Kennesaw Mountain and Bentonville. He was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General of U. S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. His father, Colonel John Kennett, organized and commanded the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry.
