SHERRILL — William E. Potter, 85, of 304 E. Hamilton Ave., Sherrill died peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, Oct. 1, 2010 in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice.

Bill was born on March 3, 1925 in Oneida, a son of Elmer and Hazel Avery Potter. He had resided in Sherrill since 1968. He was an honorary graduate of Oneida High School receiving his degree on June 28, 2001.

Bill proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He participated in the invasion of Saipan and Tinian in the Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima and was part of the first wave of combat troops in the Volcano Islands. Upon his honorable discharge Bill served 27 years with the N.Y. National Guard and 5 years with the U.S. Army Reserves. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, American Theatre of Operation Medal, Navy Unit Citation, U.S. Army Good Conduct Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation with 1 Blue Star and several campaign ribbons. His military service was a great part of his life and Bill had attended many 4th Marine Division and Iwo Jima reunions throughout the years. He was awarded Marine of the Year Award in 1995.

Bill had been employed as a production controller for Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome for 40 years retiring in 1987.

He married Mary E. Becker on July 2, 1968 in Wampsville.

Bill was a communicant of St. Helena's Church in Sherrill. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League, the Sherrill American Legion Post No. 230 where he was also a member of the Color Guard, the Archery Club and the Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow.

He was also an active volunteer with the BINGO Program at St. Patrick's School for many years, assisted with the lunch program at Holy Cross Academy and taught an archery class to the students. Bill was involved with the Boy Scouts for many years, acting as an assistant scout leader, teaching archery to Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and spending a week of his vacation every year at summer Scout camp. He was also a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society taking many patients to Syracuse for treatment.

When the Lord looked down and saw Bill was too weak to continue his journey on earth, he reached down and carried him to his eternal happiness leaving his loving wife, Mary; his children, Joan (David) Klish of Oneida, Stacia (Vernon) Fellows of Sherrill, William (Beverly) Potter of Gloucester, Va., Courtney Potter and Tracy Potter both of Rome, his step-children whom he loved as his own, Karen Anderson of Sherrill, Craig (Sandra) Anderson of Tooele, Utah, Dawn Anderson of Garner, N.C.; grandchildren, Robert and Brian Klish, Cindy Ali, Stacey Goff, Jasmine and Kaleigh Bascom, Noah and Adam Fellows, Sarah and Garrett Anderson, Christopher Potter, Maya Anderson-Badillo, Carl and Haley Westcott, Olivia and Alayna Huxley; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Kenneth of Texas and several nieces and nephews and very close friends, Dick and Cindy Heysler of Sherrill. Bill also served as a foster father to many children in the area through the years and was Foster Parent of the Year in 1992. He was pre-deceased by a granddaughter, Natalie Faith Anderson in 1998; his sisters, Beulah and Virginia and brother, George.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the entire staff at Hospice and Palliative Care for the excellent care and support given to Bill and his family during his illness. A very, very special thank you to Sandy Simmons, Bill's aide, who so lovingly cared for him and made his days brighter. She was truly our angel in disguise.

Funeral Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2010 from the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc. with Rev. William A. Mesmer, officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be made in Valley View Cemetery, Oneida. Friends are invited and may call 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.
