Clota Dean Reed Miller passed away Monday, Dec 4, 1978 at the age of 75 yrs after suffering from cancer the last several months in Clinton OK. Services were held at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Cordell, OK on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1978.
Mrs. Miller went by "Dean". Mrs. Miller was the ninth child of fifteen born to James and Mary Elizabeth (Renfrow) Reed on September 19, 1902. Her family traveled from Texas to Indian Territory near Cloud Chief Oklahoma when she was a very small child. Her parents were farmers.
Dean married Johnnie Bryer Miller on May 7, 1921 and farmed in the Cowden community, raising three daughters. Dean worked in the cotton fields along side John and other family members. She was homemaker and saw to it that the girls kept their school work done and practiced their music. The girls knew three things that were required of them: they would attend church everytime the doors were open, make good scores in school and learn to play the piano.
John and Dean retired from farming in 1955, sold the farm and built a home in Cordell, OK. To supplement their income, Dean began sewing for the people of the Cordell community. She was an expert dressmaker. Her daughters and granddaughters clothes were taylored especially for them.
She was a quiet woman but when she did say something, it had value and wisdom. She could get to the point in a few words what it would take others an hour of sermon to get across.
She loved her family and being with them. Not only her immediate family but her siblings and John's siblings and their children. She was an excellent cook and could stretch the most meager of provisions and enjoyed doing it.
She and John were lifelong members of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and supported it faithfully. She was a quiet woman. Her faith was deep and her hope secure in Jesus Christ.
Dean is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, John B. Miller, an infant daughter, Juanita Fay, her parents, her brothers, James Michael Reed, Robert Allen Reed, Jessie Franklin Reed, Charles Jefferson Reed, William Amos Reed, Alvin (Slack) Marion Reed, and Granville (Jay) Stovall Reed, her sisters: Violet Elizabeth Withers, Dora Ethel Younger, Mary Uleler Greenwood, and Lutie Allyene Reed.
