Son of Confederate General Daniel Ruggles.
Appointed cadet in Naval Academy but never completed.
Served on his father's staff and with Colonel John Mosby.
Assiisted John Wilkes Booth in his escape, after Booth had assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Was arrested and spent time in Old Capital Prison, Washington, DC. Released under general amnesty declared by President Andrew Johnson.
Died after an operation, in St. Luke's Hospital, NYC.
