Arthur S. Houston passed away Tuesday morning, October 1, at the Northfield City Hospital, following an illness of a year and a half. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the St. John's Lutheran church with the Rev. Arnold W. Nelson officiating and music was furnished by a quartet of the Northfield male chorus.
Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery with Fremont Albers, Henry Kump, Sandy MacKay, Carl Nelson, Walter Norbeck and Fred Wolf serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Robert Clark, Clarence Ganser, C. M. Larsen, A. C. Lee, Dr. C. W. Lee and William Revier of St. Paul.
BORN IN IOWA Arthur S. Houston, son of Ralph and Minnie Newton Houston, was born June 7, 1892 at Cedar Rapids, Ia. He attended the public schools in Cedar Rapids after which he spent two years at Grand Rapids before coming to Northfield 36 years ago.
Mr. Houston operated a restaurant near St. Olaf College for eight years, later he owned the Arts Ice Cream Shop until he was forced to retire because of ill health. He also was agent for selling Minnesota automobile licenses plates.
Mr. Houston was a past commander of the local American Legion Post No. 84. On October 23, 1914, he was married to Miss Margaret Dawson at Grand Rapids, who preceded him in death.
He was married July 28, 1923, in Owatonna, to Miss Gladys Sweet, who survived him. he is also survived by three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Lester Whitney (Geraldine) of Faribault, Joseph R. Houston, Northfield, Evelyn, Diane and Allen at home. Four sisters and three brothers also survive him. Mrs. James C. Waterston (Mabel), Northfield, Mrs. Guy Burrows (Florence), Port Orchard, Wash., Mrs. V. A. Hurlbutt, (Edith) of Northfield, Mrs. Nina Pogue, Northfield, H. E. Houston, Austin, Alvin Houston, Northfield, and L. N. Houston, Minneapolis, besides many nieces and nephews.
