Anna was the daughter of Wilhelm Ludwig (1821–?) and Anna Schumann Ludwig (1830–1897). She married Emil Schmalkoke on Nov. 28, 1885, in Comal Co., Texas. They had three children together:

• Harry Schmalkoke (1890–?)
In about 1903, according to her death certificate, Anna was committed to the San Antonio State Hospital, where she lived out her remaining years, dying on Feb. 5, 1932.

It's not clear from scant records online whether or not Anna and Emil were divorced or not, but Emil did later marry the former Adele Magnus and, together, they had a daughter in 1917.
