Alpha Turney passed away Thursday, September 30, 2010, at her home in Checotah, OK. Alpha May was born to Murphy and Delia Rowland September 28, 1914, in Granbury, TX and was raised in Big Spring, TX, where she met Doyle C. Turney and later married him in July 1934. Alpha May was an accomplished pianist and also organized the Rowland Trio in the 1950's. She worked in Civil Service for several years and was the church pianist at Trinity Baptist Church for more than 20 years. While attending Trinity, Alpha May was involved with music and the youth group. She moved to Kingsland, TX in 1974 where she continued to play piano for Kingsland FBC for more than 10 years, and then moved to Checotah, OK in 2003 where she spent her remaining years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Checotah. Alpha May was an amazing woman who loved and cared for her family throughout her entire life. Above all else, she loved God most of all, and was ready to go home to be with her Lord. She will be truly missed by all who knew her. Alpha May was preceded in death by husband, Doyle C. Turney; son, Jay W. Turney; grandson, Doyle M. Turney; father, Murphy Lee Rowland; mother Delia (Hayworth) Rowland; brothers, Bill and W.D. Rowland; sisters, Myrtle Stroope, Zula Barber, and Ruby Daniels. Alpha May is survived by brother, J.D. "Jake" Rowland of Big Spring, TX; grand-daughter, Michelle Turney; grandson, Larry Turney; great-grandsons, Brandon Turney and wife Shayla, Tyler Turney, Dakota Turney, James Turney, Corey Turney, and Chase Turney; great-granddaughter, Larra Turney; great-great-granddaughters, Brooklyn Turney, Chloie Turney, and Maddison Turney all of Checotah, Ok; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. Funeral services for Alpha May Turney will be 2pm Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Checotah, Ok. Pastor Steve Dennis from First Baptist Church of Checotah officiated. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with Brandon Turney, James Turney, Tyler Turnery, Thomas Banks Jr., Cody Scheffler, and Zack Ledbetter serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are Dakota Turney, Corey Turney, Chase Turney and Joe Dan Rowland.
