Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. He entered Civil War service on September 2, 1861 when he was mustered in as Captain and commander of Company B, 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Wounded during the August 22, 1864 Battle of Atlanta (losing his left leg to amputation) he rose to Colonel and commander of the regiment, receiving promotions to Major (March 20, 1863), Lieutenant Colonel (May 17, 1863) before becoming Colonel (June 6, 1865) after the war ended. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for "gallant and meritorious conduct in the campaign before Atlanta, Ga." After the war he was elected to represent Ohio's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889.
